Woman sues after infant died following birth in solitary confinement

WICHITA COUNTY, TEXAS (CNN) - A woman is suing prison officials after her newborn baby died when she was forced to give birth while in solitary confinement.

Nicole Guerrero claims nurses working at the prison ignored obvious signs that she was in labor while in jail.

She was arrested on drug possession charges in 2012.

According to her complaint filed this week, she had to give birth in her cell in 2012 with the help of a prison officer.

She says her baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. A nurse came and removed it, but the baby was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

Guerrero's lawsuit claims the county denied her due process rights, and accuses the correctional healthcare management and contracted nurses of medical malpractice.

The Wichita County District Attorney declined to comment, citing the pending litigation.

Police: 5-year-old drowns in Logan Martin Lake

PELL CITY, AL (WBRC) -

A 5-year-old boy drowned at Lakeside Park in Pell City late Monday afternoon during a family gathering, according to Pell City police.

Authorities were called to the park on the shore of Logan Martin Lake at 4:52 p.m. when the boy was discovered submerged in the water, a department spokesperson tells FOX6 News.

A nurse from Children's of Alabama was at the park and began CPR until first responders arrived, according to police.

The boy was taken St. Vincent's St. Clair where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating.
