University of South Alabama police arrested a man early Friday morning on charges including first-degree sodomy and kidnapping two days after a student told police she was sexually assaulted on campus.
Mobile County Metro Jail records show JaWaun Maurice Dawson, 24, was
charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, first-degree sexual abuse
and first-degree robbery.
Dawson is a former USA student, according to campus spokesman Bob Lowry.
Around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, a woman was forced into her car at gunpoint by a stranger, according to USA officials.
She was grabbed in the north chemistry parking lot and sexually
assaulted in the student health parking lot and Municipal Park. Her cell
phone and cash were stolen, according to USA.
University officials are expected to release more details about the arrest at a 10 a.m. press conference.
Booking records show Dawson has previously faced charges including theft and resisting arrest.
